Killer Whales

Hi All,

In the below question, the OA is
"A"
. Can someone please help me understand why
"A"
is better than
"D"
? To me
"A"
looks really awkward due to "to be"

============================================

The 32 species that make up the dolphin family are closely related to whales and in fact include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is famous for its aggressive hunting pods.

A. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and is
B. include the animal known as the killer whale, growing as big as 30 feet long and
C. include the animal known as the killer whale, growing up to 30 feet long and being
D. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow as big as 30 feet long and is
E. include the animal known as the killer whale, which can grow to be 30 feet long and it is

E, wont be right because of ambigous pronoun - its .

The tie is really between A and D ---

what is the source ? According to GMAT rules, which is not really used to modify nouns (here: whale) -- however, with process of elimination which is better than growing. 'To be' could be used since it can grow ... something in future that may occur ..

want to hear what other experts say on this ...

Thanks. But in that discussion "to be" issue does not become very clear....

Can someone please help me understand how "to be" is correct in "A"...

isn't it looking awkward ?

Yes "A" is the best of the lot.

But can you please help me understand what is the meaning of this sentence. I am a bit confused by the language of the below sentence.

"which can grow to be 30 feet long "

and how it is different from

"which can grow upto 30 feet long "
