Profile Evaluation

Stacy,

I'd like to get a sense of my chances at both the big three (Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton) and the next group of schools (Sloan, Kellogg, Chicago, Tuck, and Columbia).

I'm also wondering whether it makes sense for me to retake the GMAT. My practice tests were in the 730-750 range and I was always scoring 45 for the verbal sections.

Undergraduate: 3.68 GPA from Yale, double major in Engineering Sciences (Electrical) and Economics

GMAT: 710, 48Q, 40V, 6 AWA

Experience: 3 years as an analyst at a small/mid-sized venture capital fund ($300M under management, media/communications and healthcare focus) in the southeast and 2 years (by the time I go to B School) as an associate at a mid-sized VC firm ($600M under management, software focus) in Boston.

Extracurriculars: Big Brother, was the Treasurer of the local Yale Club in my previous town (before I moved to Boston)

Interests/Other Facts: Interested in entrepreneurship and rounding out management skills before working at a start-up or other VC portfolio company. Keen interest in new business models and innovation. Not too exotic in terms of background, grew up in Illinois, have seen several regions of the country (northeast, southeast, midwest). Did grow up in a single parent household, which is one of the reasons I became a Big Brother.

Thanks,

Todd

Dear Todd:

I think you have a competitive profile for top 10 MBA programs. It could be worth retaking your GMAT if you feel you can increase your score to 750+. The key for you is to demonstrate your unique attributes and your value to the program. I think you have all the pieces for a strong application; you just need to position yourself in the best way.

Best of luck,
Lisa
