when will it ask for school names?

by mahesh7 » Tue Jul 14, 2009 10:34 am
hi

I have a quick question. When do we need to enter the school codes to send scores to during the exam? Is it after seeing the score or before seeing the score? What happens if I want to change the school codes after seeing the score? Can someone walk through the sequence of screens that we will see during the test?

Thanks
mahesh

It's actually before you start the test. If at the end of the test you choose to submit the score, I don't think there's a way to change the schools.

Do we have to know the actual school "codes" or do is are they easy to find/possible to find at the test center?

Is there a time limit for this process...(choosing the schools)?

Is there any disadvantage to not selecting any schools?
(I am taking the GMAT because my employer would like me to do so before I start work in less than two weeks. I will not be applying for 2-3 years. Will it cost me extra money to send out score to more schools. If I get a poorer score than I wanted is it always on the score report? etc.)

The search is very easy. You can seatch by keyword, state and country. No codes required. I didn't notice a timer on that page but I already knew my selection so I went through it fairly quickly.
The obvious disadvantage of not selecting any schools (assuming you could skip the selection process) is that you will need to pay $28 (if I am not mistaken) for every school you later choose to receive your score. However, since it is free I recommend you just select the top 5 schools on your list right now. If things change by the time you'll be applying in 2 years, you can always order additional score reports.

Is there any reason not to send the scores to our dream schools? For example, in the event that we have to retake, wouldnt submitting the 1st score look really bad?

Or does it not matter because they'll see the score even if we retake and therefore everyone should use the free submit score option?

Hello all,

I would like to know if it is mandatory to send the reports to 5 schools at the time of giving the exam or we can defer the sending of score reports to a later time? If we can defer, then is this option also valid till 5 yrs i.e we can use the free 5 school option till the gmat score expires?

regards,
Varun

It is not mandatory. I took the test in May of this year and am not applying for at least 3 more years. I decided not to report the scores to any school. So to answer your question, no it is not mandatory to report your scores to any school.

Mike why did you not submit the scores anyway? What is there to lose from submitting?

Is it that I lose out on the "Free Score Reporting" option if i dont send my scores at the time of giving the gmat? How long wil this option remain open to me?

Score reporting is only free if you do it when you actually take the test. Any point after that, you'll have to pay $28/school.

I have no idea where I will be in 3 or 4 years so I decided not to report to any schools. In hind sight, I guess I should have just chosen 5 because it can not hurt. But the point is that you do not have to.
