I think "by supporting" in A is better than "in support of" in C. they acquiesced ... by supporting, not acquiesced ... in support of. I'll go with A, although "while" might have been preferred over "where", there's really nothing wrong with using "where" in this sentence

Sorry about that! I don't usually come in and choose answer choices to questions myself, since I don't want to get in the way of people who are actively pursuing GMAT excellence! I'm here to help you all in your processes.
On this one, I'd have chosen A because "had acquiesced" takes place prior to "made" and because "by supporting" is better than wordier options.

I feel the correct answer should be A. 'by supporting' looks better than 'in support of' ..GmatKiss wrote:Where once the union had acquiesced to the prejudices of its English-speaking members by supporting the imposition of an alien tax on immigrant workers, after 1897 the United Mine Workers made a determined effort to enlist Italians and Slavs in its ranks.
(A) Where once the union had acquiesced to the prejudices of its English-speaking members by supporting
(B) Where once the union acquiesced to it English-speaking members' prejudice for the support of
(C) While once the union had acquiesced to the prejudices of its English-speaking members in support of
(D) While once the union acquiesced to its English-speaking members' prejudice in supporting
(E) While once the union had acquiesced to the prejudices of its English-speaking members in its supporting of
Please explain your pick

The answer should be A. 'Where once the union had acquiesced' refers to the union's course of action prior to 1897 (what the union was doing, how things were). 'By supporting' provides more information on how the union had acquiesced (non essential modifier) and works best with 'where once' instead of 'in support of' or 'for support of' which would change the meaning of the sentence.

In all the sentences above possessive pronoun "its" has been used to refer the subject noun. As per Manhattan SC Rules possessive pronoun should only refer back to possessive noun and same for subject/object pronouns. Can any GMAT instructor please confirm the usage of "its" in all the options here ?
