Looking to Improve 370 to 500?

Hello everyone,

I had just completed my first GMAT exam and scored a 370.
Verbal - 20(23%)
Quantitative - 21(8%)
Integrated Reasoning - 4(40%)
Analytical Writing - 3.5(13%)

Although this is a low score, I did not study for this exam. I would like to schedule a second exam in late April or early May and increase my score to above a 500. I have purchased 'The Official Guide to the GMAT Review 2017 Bundle' with a general review book, quantitative, and verbal. Does anybody have an idea if this material would be able to help me improve in this time frame? Or am I shooting a too big for the allotted time frame? Also, what would be a good study plan regarding these materials?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Hi arybolt,

To start, I'm curious about why you would attempt the GMAT without doing any study for it. Were you facing some type of application deadline? Beyond that question, why is your score goal a 500+? It's a relatively modest goal (the average goal on the Official GMAT hovers around 540-550 most years), so it's absolutely achievable. However, since you've done no study yet, you have to learn all of the necessary content, practice Tactics and hone your overall Test Taking skills - and all of that work takes time. Since you're essentially starting 'from scratch', it's likely that you will need at least 2-3 months of consistent, guided study to hit your goal. By extension, the idea to retest in late April or early May is probably not realistic - so you might have to consider pushing back your planned Test Date.

1) When you took the GMAT, did you have to rush to finish any of the sections (and if so, how many questions did you end up guessing on? Did you leave any questions unanswered?)?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

I would say I was in same boat as I improved from 460-500 to 610. That said there is no shortcut to success, You have to learn the content and it took me more than 6 months .To increase your score you need to focus on Verbal and Quant separately. Math Revolution is good website to learn Maths content , for verbal E-Gmat is good. .You also need to practice official questions , I practiced Official Guide 10 Th Edition for Maths it has lot more official questions , you can get it on Amazon.com for as little as $1 add $24 if you live outside of US . Get hold of all old Official Guides on Amazon and start practicing. You also to practice IR Official questions , you can get them free along with latest Edition of Official Guide I got 5 in IR.However I skipped Essay in Mocks but it is okay as you just need good typing speed on D-Day.Buy Exam Pack 1 and 2 and other official questions, they help a lot in practice.

This material is good for practice once you've established a strong conceptual foundation and have mastered the relevant strategies for dealing with various questions types. Getting that foundation is important. Take some free products or trials for a spin to find material that suits your learning style.
