How can I improve my application?

Hi,

First and foremost, thank you for this wonderful public service that you are providing. I have recently decided to pursue the GMAT and ultimately Grad school and would be all but lost if not for the info provided by this site.

I'm a 25 year old male three years removed from graduating from a Virginia public school with a 2.8 GPA (wish it were higher). I've been working in Sales/Marketing ever since, and have a respectable track record of success. I plan on studying for the GMAT for about 6 months before taking it as I work full time and can only devote a couple hours a day to studying.

As I am finding out, admission offices look at much more than simply undergrad performance and GMAT scores. My question is what can I do from now until application time to enhance my application (volunteer work, etc)?

As you know, there are many different parts of an MBA application -- far beyond simple academics. At this stage, your work history is pretty much what it is and you really have to focus on making sure that the controllable aspects of your application are as strong as they can be. This means spending a significant amount of time on your essays, resumes, recommendations, interview skills and the like. You can have an application that is competitive in all other aspects, but if you fall short on these it will really damage your chances. At this stage of the game, you really need to get started as early as possible on these.

I would suggest that you seek out opportunities (at work or elsewhere) that enable you to use your leadership skills as well as teamwork skills. Leadership opportunities are very important and can serve as great material for essays. Any other opportunities to give back to the community in a meaningful way will also be a good reflection on you and the type of business person you will be someday.

Recommendations are also one of the most important factors in an application so make sure to do a good job at work and make sure that your managers (recommenders) see that you do what it takes to go above and beyond what is expected.
