Hi all,

firstly I am so grateful to have found this page, it's incredible and the amount of information found here is amazing.

I have started studying for the GMAT one month ago but have put a quite lot of hours into it by now, around 6 hours each day on average I would say. I did a practice test at the beginning of my studies and had an estimated score of around 600 (quants 32 / verbal 40) and since then have gone through all the maths questions in the official review (13th edition) and also the accompanying quants study guide. I understand the questions that I get wrong but still struggle to perform the calculations on my own sometimes. I always used to be good at maths so I am not sure why this test is such a big problem, probably because I didn't do much maths since my A Levels so I am a bit rusty. However, I did another test today on GMAT Prep and scored 700 (quants 45 / verbal 41 / IR 8). I was very happy, 700 would be a fantastic result but now I need to make sure that I actually get that score. I am a bit worried especially after having read stories here where people had 700 in the practice test and then scored 580 in the real GMAT!
I know the maths sections where I make most mistakes and I thought about buying the accompanying video courses on GMAT Prep Now, as even after reviewing the instructions in the book I am not 100% clear on how to perform certain calculations (e.g. probabilities, powers, roots especially!). My verbal score is OK and considering English isn't my first language, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm not sure if I could improve this section so I think I should focus on the maths.

I'd just really appreciate some advice on how I should best use my last 14 days (my test is today in 2 weeks' time) to maximise my results. I am devoting all my time to this test and am currently studying for it around 8-10 hours each day, so I feel like I need to make the most of this time. Please could you just give me some advice, maybe further study material, or other strategies that I should use?

Thank you so much in advance.

Kate

Hi Kate,

700 on your second practice test is awesome - great work!

Your Verbal score is fantastic. When you mentioned your A-levels, I just assumed you were born in the UK (and a native English speaker). The fact that English isn't your first language makes your Verbal score all the more impressive.

You're right; some people crumble/implode in a formal testing environment. This is why I suggest that students achieve their target score on at least 2 practice tests before taking the official test. This will help build some much-needed confidence heading into G-Day.

Despite your uncertainty regarding your math skills, it may be the case that you already possess the skills necessary to achieve your target score. I suggest that you take another practice test to see whether 700 is a score you can achieve on a regular basis. From there, you can decide whether you need additional resources.

Cheers,
Brent

Hi,

thanks for the great advice, I followed it and did 3 more practice tests in the meantime. I have now completed all test in GMAT PREP twice (as recommended) and after each test have taken screenshots of the maths questions I did wrong and found solutions for them (thanks to this fantastic forum!!) so I could familiarise myself with concepts which I previously didn't understand. Obviously some questions in the GMAT PREP tests are repetitive so I came across questions which I had practiced before in the quants section, but the verbal section I never really reviewed because I thought I couldn't improve anyway.

My test reports were as follows:
GMAT PREP 1, 16 Oct - 700 (QU 45 / V 41)
GMAT PREP 2, 21 Oct - 680 (QU 46, V 38) - I thought the Quant Part had gone really badly so rushed through the Verbal in around 30 minutes... definitely shouldn't have done that!
GMAT PREP 1, 22 Oct - 730 (QU 48, V 42)
GMAT PREP 2, 25 Oct - 770 (QU 49, V 47)

I am still very unsure about whether I'll make the 700 cut on Tuesday (my test day) because as I said the questions in the quants section were repetitive (at least 3-4) so I don't know if I could have done them if I hadn't looked them up on this forum over the last week or so.

I am going to do at least 4 more different tests online over the weekend (I think there's a post here with a lot of practice tests so that's what I'm going to do) and also practice some more 700+ maths questions - now that I have done a lot of PS, I can see my DS score getting worse so that's what I need to focus on now.

Is there anything else at this stage that I should be doing apart from practicing, practicing, practicing? I only have 4 days left until my test and I just want to be confident that I will get at least 700 :( Some maths questions I am so unsure about still so it's a little bit of a miracle to me anyway how I got 49 today.

Thanks for much for the help! Without this forum I wouldn't feel ready for this test at all.

Great test scores, Kate!
In addition to practicing, I suggest doing some work around anxiety reduction. As I mentioned earlier, some people crumble at test center.
There are lots of different strategies (deep breathing, positive imagery, etc.). Find the one that works best for you.

If you're interested, we have a free video that suggests one anxiety-reducing strategy: https://www.gmatprepnow.com/module/gener ... es?id=1252

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks Brent, I'll definitely have a look and apply some of the techniques. I'm usually not scared of exams, but I guess because I've worked so hard for this and because it's soooo important I'm just really nervous! :( Hopefully a few more (good) practice tests will make me more confident and the anxiety reducing exercises will then help me give my best on test day.

Thanks!

Hi,

I have taken my GMAT today and have scored (a disappointing) 690. QU 45, V 40. I was hoping for 700 which is even more annoying as I know that QU 45 V 40 can also result in 700! However, I have to say that last week sadly one of my closest family members passed away, and obviously that hit me really hard, and I also had to fly back home for the funeral etc so I definitely lost some study time there, plus my mental state hasn't been the best over the past days. Also, I didn't send off my last question in the maths section (I assumed that it would automatically be sent but then realised I had to confirm) and the test supervisors told me to take off my watch and that they'd let me know when my break time of 8 minutes is over, but didn't so when I started my verbal section, I only had 72 minutes left which did stress me out a little bit. Throughout the whole test, I wasn't very stressed at all though apart from the last 15 minutes of the quant section - I had to guess a few of the last questions because I ran out of time.

I think I can definitely improve, and I want to do the test again in around 6 weeks. I will read up some more strategies here and try to improve my maths in my weak areas - I am unsure how to prepare better because I have put so much preparation into this already but I am hoping for the best. I usually UNDERSTAND all the concepts but then couldn't apply them on the test or didn't see where to use which concept.

Fingers crossed for the next attempt... and I was kind of looking forward to an end of the studying!! :(

Thanks again,

Kate

Hi Kate,

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of a family member. It sounds like everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

I don't think there's anything extra you need to do to score 700+. If any of the above problems hadn't occurred, you would have likely reached your target score.

All you need to do now is retain your skills. You can probably do this be taking the occasional practices test and reviewing your errors afterwards.

All the best,
Brent

Thanks Brent - I keep thinking to myself "If I only would have hit "confirm" in my quants test I would have had 700" but obviously now it's too late.
I think if I am going to retake it, then I may as well try and get more than 700 - the difference between 690 and 700 isn't that big so if I revise for another month then I want to try and get 720. I am planning to apply for an MSc, not an MBA, but the average for most universities is between 680 and 720 so with my 690, I am definitely at the lower end.
I have read some success stories in the forum and I know that my quants section is the big problem so I will have to focus more on IMPROVING rather than PRACTICING. However, any additional tips and tricks are very welcome. At the moment I feel very exhausted and a bit lost as to where to start again.

Thanks!
Kate

Haha just reading back on this now - I have my second GMAT tomorrow!!

I feel fairly confident to be honest, I just want 700 and after 4 more weeks of studying, I think I can do it.

I changed my strategy and went through the MGMAT topics where I was unsure (Combinatorics, Word Problems, Geometry...) and practiced the books and question banks. This has really helped me. Also, after each test exam I'd go over the mistakes I made again and again.

I have just taken my 6th MGMAT CAT today, and in total I had the following scores:

1st: 660
2nd: 720
3rd-6th: 730 (literally exactly the sames scores on all of them! Didn't have any repeated questions though).

GMAT Prep 1 + 2: both 770 - had around 5 repeated questions each though (of which I usually got 2 wrong...)

I think I can get 700, so please cross fingers for me tomorrow!! :) After over 3 months of studying, I finally want this test out of my life! ;)

Thanks Brent - I'm just on the way back from the testing center now - I got 710 (qu 45, v 41) - not a big improvement but I'm content I've finally cracked the magic 700 ;) also I am so happy to finally have the test out of my life. I'm applying for msc programmed rather than MBAs so I think 710 is definitely a good score to apply with. :) thanks for the support!!
