Geologists in California have discovered a fault near the famous San Andreas Fault, one that they believe to be a trigger for major quakes on the San Andreas.

my qustion is what does one refering to in OA and by which rule

"One" always refers to the subject being talked about.
So, here the 'one' refers to the discovered fault.

Hi vipulgoyal,

As you know, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. There are many, many pronouns in the English language, and they all do the same thing.

There are three types of pronouns: subject pronouns (for example, he); object pronouns (him); and possessive pronouns (his). "One" in the question is an object pronoun.

Here, "one" refers to the object of the sentence, the noun "fault." Rather than repeat the noun, the second part of the sentence replaces the noun with the pronoun "one."

Hi vipulgoyal,

This SC is built around some pronoun rules and an idiom rule:

1) Pronouns - The pronoun "one" refers to "a fault", so this pronoun is appropriate for this sentence. Eliminate D.

2) Pronoun/Redundancy - The word "that" is ALSO a pronoun, but it's redundant (and as such, unnecessary). Eliminate A and C.

3) Idioms - The word "believe" must be followed, at some point, by the phrase "to be." Eliminate E.

Final Answer: B
