how to study/prepare

I am just beginning to think about doing my MBA and i wanted to know how people have studied and found success.

I want to do my MBA part time and am looking at either attending Rutgers or NYU. I have looked at taking a prep class but they are so expensive and are they really worth it or can just reviewing on your own help. I have heard differing opinions on these strategies. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you a self-starter? can you motivate yourself? Can you stick with timetables you create for yourself? Basically do you have discipline and self control?

If you are nodding right now, then you need to only buy the relevant books mentioned on this forum and be thorough with your analysis. Ie why you got certain questions right and others wrong, or why is every other answer in a verbal q wrong.etc

If you answer No to the above questions, then please take a class.

yeah I am one of very few people I know who can go home after work and study 2-3 hours a night for 2-3 months to get ready for the test. I guess I just saved myself a ton of money.

I think that you'll find out whether you need a prep class after you've studied for a bit. Take a practice test now to see your starting point, then take another in a couple weeks to see if you're improving. If you find that you're stuck at, say, 550 for weeks at a time, you may want to invest in a prep class. A prep class costs virtually nothing relative to the benefit (future salary potential) of getting into NYU.

Once you find out the score you need, how you do on one diagnostic test (if not a few) and how you need to present your best self in your applications...you will do the math and figure out if you need to take a course, find a tutor, study buddy or not.

The fact that you're disciplined would indicate to me that considering working with a tutor who will focus in on bolstering your weak areas might wind up being much more cost effective, and have more ROI, than a course - - you'll be saving a lot of class time. Though hourly, for the expertise and product of one-on-one attention, you'll likely be paying more. Again, going to business school is an investment in your future...and I hope you don't want to scrimp on your education or chances of getting into the best school.

Again, this also all depends on where your score winds up being and what kind of student you are.

I also recommend you take a diagnostic test from the GMAC folks themselves. There are 4 free ones available online..and numerous retired tests for sale. I believe getting questions straight from the 'horses hooves' is going to offer the least biased score. I recommend these tests before going over to 3rd party tests, though if you're going to use 3rd party tests, embed them in your study - - do them in the middle and begin and end with the real thing.

Don't GMAC offer only 2 CAT in gmat prep software ?
