Let Jean's stamps = x stamps
Let Mike's stamps = 2x stamps
Mike gave out 6 stamps to Jean and still has 8 more stamps than Jean.
$$Therefore,\ 2x-6=x+6+8$$
$$2x=x+14+6$$
$$x=20$$
Originally, Mike possess 2x stamps.
Mike = 2x; where x = 20
Mike = 2 * 20 = 40 stamps originally

Answer = option E

We can create the equation:

2J - 6 = 8 + (J + 6)

J = 20

So Mike had 2 x 20 = 40 stamps originally.
