Dear All

Can anyone help me with the below mentioned question? Which out of the 5 options is the correct answer and why?

Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was a painter and a musician, created paintings both based on the pop-art works of Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, yet he rejected pop-art's promotion of consumerism and embraced overtly political themes in his work.
A) Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was a painter and a musician, created paintings both based
B) Jean-Michel Basquiat, the painter and musician, created paintings that were based both
C) Painter and musician Jean-Michel Basquiat, who created paintings based
D) Painter and musician Jean-Michel Basquiat created paintings that were based

Comparision in Both X and Y is wrong in options A , B and E.

D is wrong because that were is not needed.

C is the correct answer.

I thought just the opposite.. C is incorrect due to "Who"

that were after Paintings clearly refers to the Paintings.

I think Answer should be D.

B) Jean-Michel Basquiat, the painter and musician, created paintings that were based both

C) Painter and musician Jean-Michel Basquiat, who created paintings based (run-on sentence - there is no verb for 1st clause)

D) Painter and musician Jean-Michel Basquiat created paintings that were based (were is refering to painting; Since both is absent, no need for parrlllism)

E) Painter and musician Jean-Michel Basquiat created paintings based both (same as A)

Agree that "that were" is not necessary in (D), however, (D) is the only correct answer.

The word "yet" in the middle of the sentence is a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS), requiring two independent clauses, one on each side of it. The original sentence has "Basquiat ... created ... yet ... he rejected," which is correct. However, in (C), there is no main verb in the first clause, because "created" is placed inside the dependent relative clause beginning with "who." While (C) is more concise, it is technically a sentence fragment.

In (A), (B), and (E), "both" cannot be used because the painter's name, Robert Raushenberg, follows the "and" that is the second part of the "both...and..." correlative construction; thus we'd have to say "....paintings based on the pop-art works of BOTH Andy Warhol AND Robert Rauschenberg," or it could be "...paintings based BOTH ON the pop-art works of Andy Warhol AND ON those of Robert Raushbenberg," or it could be "...paintings BOTH BASED ON ... AND BASED ON..." but none of these are possible at all given what's underlined and what's not.

Thus, (D), which is not the most concise possibility, is the only correct possibility.

Hi SticklorForDetails,

I have one doubt on the above part which you explained i.e you called the first part i.e Painter and musician xxxx a clause but aren't clauses contain both subject and verb in it? If yes then how can Painter and musician xxxx be called a clause?

Hi sticklor For Details
I thought Painter and Musician is a modifier so it must be followed by a comma. But there is no comma here . What am i missing here ?
I Seek Explanations Not Answers
