Oxford : Re-application strategy

by nihon.neko » Tue Aug 10, 2010 8:42 am
Would highly appreciate if you advice on this. Unlike other business schools, Oxford Said does not move applications from one year to the next. This means candidate needs to submit a brand new application each time he/she decides to re-apply.

Does the candidate need to take a fresh topic for the second essay question (Which recent development, world event or book has most influenced your thinking and why)? My another curiosity is whether old application should have any effect on the new one?

Dear nihon.neko,

You should always assume a school will pull your previous application if you are a re-applicant. Since Oxford explicitly states you need to submit a new application package, then I think it would be advantageous to write a new set of essays. I don't know that you need to necessarily pick a new topic for the second essay--you certainly can--but you do need to write a new essay on that topic. As for how much of an impact your previous application will have, that is debatable and most likely not much beyond comparing the two to make sure you have submitted something new and that you have addressed any concerns or weaknesses. They will want to see that you have improved as a candidate since last year.

Good luck,
Lisa
