PRINCETON-LIBRARY

by pradeepkaushal9518 » Tue Jun 29, 2010 8:10 am
The Pleasantville Library instituted new rules allowing only children who already have library cards to check out books. All of the children who have library cards are over the age of ten. However, the Pleasantville PTA believes that children under the age of ten should be given an opportunity to have library cards.

The opinion of the Pleasantville PTA rests on the presupposition that

if children are given library cards it will encourage them to read

children over the age of ten should check out books for children under ten

children under the age of ten should be allowed to check out books even if they do not have library cards

the library rules should give all children a chance to have a library card, regardless of age

libraries should do everything they can to encourage people of all ages to read, because reading is the best way to gain knowledge

Fact 1: Only children who already have cards can check-out books.
Fact 2: All children with cards are older than 10.

PTA's opinion: Children under the age of 10 should be given cards.

What is the presupposition / assumption of this opinion?

A. Encourage them to read - irrelevant.

B. Why can't the children under 10 check their own books out?

C. Nope, they want them to have cards so that they can check their own books out.

D. Library rules should give children of all ages a chance - exactly. This is what they want to happen and this is the basis / presupposition for their opinion that children under age 10 should also get cards.

E. Encouraging reading is out of cope.

Pick D.
