both X and Y is the correct idiom, where X and Y are parallel. B
is the only choice that maintains this parallelism.

The original sentence has a misplaced which. So, rule out A

C - missing verb in sentence after Incan highway.

D - road was not extended.

E - "the Incan highway was over 2500 miles long" is incorrect. I'd
expect a comma after "Incan highway".

My choice would be B though it isn't the perfect answer.

Hi!

We can quickly eliminate D and E - "both" should be modifying "reflect", so putting reflects after both messes up the sentence.

C is also out - "the extent of poor currency exchange rates keeping" is far too awkward.

A is also poorly structured. Since "success" precedes "both", "success" must apply to both parts of the list. So, A really reads:

The soft drink company's flat earnings for the second quarter reflect the success of ... its restructured global bottling system and [the success of] the extent to which poor currency exchange rates keep down profits for multinational companies.

Since "the success of the extent to which..." makes no sense, A can be eliminated.

Only B gets all the modifiers in the right place. Simplifying B, we have:

"The... earnings... reflect both [the success of x] and [the extent to which y does z]"

which is grammatically correct and stylistically just fine.

to add to one thing stuart said --

there's actually a very specific reason why this is wrong. see here (cross posted from another forum):
https://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/pos ... tml#p26678

it's important to know reasons for this sort of thing, because determining "awkward" vs. "non-awkward" is, for all practical purposes, impossible for those who are not native speakers of the language.
