If the range of the set containing the numbers x, y, and z is 8, what is the value of the smallest number in the set?

1) The average of the set containing the numbers x, y, z, and 8 is 12.5

2) The mean and the median of the set containing the numbers x, y, and z are equal.

Range=High-Low=8

stmt1,

x+y+z+8/4=12.5

x+Y+Z=42

There are many possibile values for smallest number.

Insuff

stmt2,

x=1,y=5,z=9,Smallest number is 1

x=-1,y=3,z=7,Smallest number is -1

Insuff

Combining 1 and 2,

x+y+z=42

Let the smallest number be X and largest number be Z

Z-x=8

Z=x+8

-->2x+y=34

x+y+z/3=Y

x+y+z=3y or x+z=2y

2x+8=2y or x-y=4

Solving 2 eqns we can get value of X.

Pick C
