GMAT 620 - Target Universities in US

I gave the GMAT exam on 24th April,2013 and scored an average score of 620 (Q46,V30). I have decided to retake the exam. However, I want to know my admission chances with this score for the fall'14 intake. Please let me know the list of business schools where I will stand a chance with the following profile:

Graduation : Btech in Computer Science and Engineering - Class of 2011 - CGPA: 8.62/10
Work Ex: Business Technology Analyst in Deloitte US India Consulting focusing on Enterprise Applications. (June 2011 - Present)

As a part of corporate social responsibility, I have worked extensively with a Bridge school.
Decent Extra-curricular activities in college

Post Mba Short term goal: Change my career path to management and business consulting.

Please let me know my chances. Thanks in advance.

Hi thejokermaniac - Welcome to BTG!

As you are undoubtedly aware, your profile is quite common; there's lots of candidates coming from India with a very similar background, and the competition is therefore intense. Your undergrad marks are strong and you're at the right age to be thinking about the MBA, so that's good. It's also good to hear that you're going to be retaking the GMAT, since the score does matter if you want to get into a top business school.

Obviously there's more to you than just the GMAT and GPA and the schools do in fact look at the entirety of the application. However, the 620 is pretty low for the Top 20-ish schools. It's also very difficult to offer much worthwhile feedback in the limited space of a forum post. If you do some searches here you will likely find many many others with a similar background/set of stats and you can see what they've been told. Here's one just for starters: https://www.beatthegmat.com/gmat-second- ... tml#424037 We mentioned a few schools in that answer; you can also see the GMAT averages and ranges on the BusinessWeek profiles for the schools. You could look there to identify which schools are appropriate targets for a 620 GMAT score.

Hi,

You must write GMAT again (aim for 690+) and then target top b-schools. As you have an avg. profile, so I would suggest to skilfully frame application essays and showcase professionalism, achievements at work place and ability to contribute to the class during final interviews. If you are able to demonstrate these atributes in your essays, then you would be able to convert your chances from application to admission.

Hello Everyone,

I finished with my 2nd attempt yesterday and managed to add just 20 points to my first attempt score. So with a 640 (Q47,V31) and my profile, do I have a realistic chance of securing a place in the incoming fall'14 class of a decent bschool in US?

Also, should I consider a third attempt? Will 3 scores in the final score report do more harm than good? (I was consistently scoring 690 700 in my mock tests (mgmat, kaplan and gmat prep) before the 2nd attempt)

Hey thejokermaniac - congrats on bumping the score up! The 640 is getting you closer to what the better schools want to see, but you're still definitely going to be challenged if you want to crack the Top 15-ish MBA programs. It really depends on what your definition of "decent school" is - there are plenty of very good programs that would be open to an app from someone with a 640.

That being said, if you're up for it, then yes, taking the test one more time might be a good idea. The main problem with that is it pushes you out to Round 2, probably. A better GMAT score in a later round is a worthwhile tradeoff, and it's not going to be a huge disadvantage at the mid-range schools. There's no problem with 3 GMAT tests but you'll want to make this last one count! We don't recommend testing more than 3 times.

If you have some ideas of what schools you'd be targeting then we can be more specific with feedback on whether your current 640 is enough to move forward or not.

No matter what, good job for trying again and the +20 is definitely helping!!

Thanks essaysnark for the prompt reply and kind words. My definition of a decent school is definitely a mid-range school. Having said that, I am interested in schools which have a strong focus on strategy and consulting as my post mba short term goal is to make a transition from IT consulting to Business and strategy consulting. Thus, I plan to target the following schools in R1:
1. Kelley School of Business.
2. Fisher College of Business - Ohio State
3. W.P. Carey Business School - Arizona State
4. Schulich Business School - York University

Please feel free to add schools to the above list as it will help me to explore more options.(even Asian Schools)

Also, I am not too sure whether I will be able to make the 3rd attempt count as I was definitely expecting a better score than 640 in my 2nd attempt. Hence, I will be looking forward to maximize my options with this score.

You would totally have a shot at any of those schools with your 640 GMAT. They still want to see good career goals and reasons why you need an MBA, etc., but they are all in range for you. Turn your attention to those essays and don't worry about the GMAT again for now. If you don't make any headway in Round 1, then you can consider the GMAT again (provided your essays are strong! people often submit essays that are much weaker than they realize).

You can pretty much take the GMAT exam as much as you want without it hurting you. So, I would still recommend you retaking the exam. As a male Indian applicant applying with a 640 GMAT score you will have difficulty gaining acceptance to top 25 schools, especially if your undergraduate school is unranked.

Sorry but this is NOT TRUE. Different schools look at it differently but many schools begin to question things after a reasonable number of attempts. Too many GMAT tests can start to weigh a profile down and there is most definitely a law of diminishing returns in this area.
