Failed 2nd time GMAT-600 Q 48 V25

by karan_s » Wed Feb 27, 2013 12:58 am
Hi Experts

Can anyone tell me whether number of attempts do count during applications as this was my second attempt. And I'm planning to give the GMAT third time. Let say if I score a 730+ in my third attempt, will B schools still consider my applications??

Generally schools don't mind if a candidate takes the GMAT more than once. What seems important is whether you have managed to achieve a higher score in your next attempts.

Thanks Kasia for your prompt response. Would request you to please suggest strategies for my next attempt. Following are my mock and actual GMAT scores

Actual GMAT 1st attempt Q47 V 20 (Learned from my mistakes)

MGMAT 1 680 Q 47 V 35
MGMAT 2 710 Q48 V 38
MGMAT 3 680 Q49 V 34
MGMAT 4 690 Q47 V 37

GMATPrep 1 750 Q 50 V40
GMAT Prep 2 710 Q50 V 35

Actual GMAT(2nd attempt) 600 Q48 V25

My concerns are as follows

1. I have High regards for MGMAT Mocks but still puzzled about my Verbal 25 and Quant 48

2. All test done in real environment ( AWA+ IR +8min break+Quant+8min break+ Verbal)

3. Actual GMAT : SC was a a relatively easy, CR was okay nothing tough, RC 3 passage were good and last one a bit tough.

4. Quant was relatively easy as compared to GMAT Prep but still confused why Q 48.

I followed following books

OG 12, OG 10, Manhattan SC, Manhattan RC, Power score CR Bible, GMAT Question Pack 1 ( very useful)

Also I had no anxiety before tests and during test.

I am in no way Questioning MGMAT or GMAT Prep but still confused. Also Please suggest strategy for my Third and Final Attempt. I am aiming 750+ (yeah, seems high considering 550 and 660, but still achievable)

Please Help.

I have one more question - when would you like to take the exam?
As to your preparation, I think you need to debrief your tests very carefully. Note down questions in three categories:
1. correct but took too long
2. incorrect and took too long
3. incorrect and within the time limit

This way you can identify your weaker subjects and improve on them. If you know that a question type takes too long and, moreover, you don't answer correctly, consider using the personalized guessing strategy.

Hi Kasia thanx again for your response
Following are my score distribution in Verbal

MGMAT 1

Verbal

14 CR- 6 incorrect
12 RC- 6 incorrect
15 SC- 3 incorrect

MGMAT 2

14 CR- 5 incorrect
12 RC-6 incorrect
15 SC- 1 incorrect

MGMAT 3

14 CR- 4 incorrect
12 RC- 8 incorrect
15 SC-3 incorrect

MGMAT 4
14 CR- 4 incorrect
12 RC- 7 incorrect
15 SC- 3 incorrect

SC i take less than 1.5 mins to get the Q correctly.
RC maximum incorrect
CR various anywhere between 1.5 to 2 mins.

Okay after analyzing the above data, i gather i do mistakes in RC. But still V 25 is pretty dam low.
And also possibility that i did all the RC incorrect is very very low.So thats what disturbing.

As of now i haven't decided as to when i will take the exam as i have only one attempt left( third time is last for me) and i don't want to make things difficult by attempting the third time unprepared.

What's bothering me is - let say i again prepare for Verbal and let say I again score well in mocks, but what if results are same as my second GMAT attempt. Thats why I'm a bit confused as to where should i start my verbal preparation

Quant is another puzzle as well. GMAT Prep 1 and GMAT Prep 2 i scored Q50. Yes MGMAT quant are bit on a tougher side, but Q48 is still low for me. I know I can do better. I did take MGMAT Quant seriously and made notes of my mistakes, but all Efforts in vain.

Karan,
Don't lose your hope or motivation. I am sure that the time you have spent preparing so far has not be totally wasted. I know this is a commonly repeated cliche but mistakes can teach you more than successes :)
As to your preparation, I would like you to debrief the tests in a more detailed way. Take the time to read each question (if possible) and note down the question type (e.g. SC Parallelism or Modifiers) so that you know which question type EXACTLY is a challenge. Stating only how many questions out of CR, SC and RC were done incorrectly, as you have rightly noticed, does not give us too much info about your weaknesses.
Also consider other factors that might have hindered your performance - test-taking anxiety, distraction, time-management.

Kasia,
Big thanx again

My worries have just begun.

1. Materials-> all Exhausted.

2. No time to relax and i need to start prep again so that i don't loose momentum. No more month's leave from work ( happens once in a lifetime)

3. Words can't describe how dejected i am.

4. Third and last attempt is all i have left.

You can always try to go over some of the materials again. I am sure there will be quite a few questions that you can re-use. The same can be done with sim tests. Don't get discouraged.
Have you given me your predicted date of the exam in any of the earlier posts?

hi, i received a private message about this thread.

here are some thoughts in regard to what's been written in recent posts:
karan_s wrote:1. Materials-> all Exhausted.
that's unlikely -- there are lots of other things you can do with the materials.

see here:

2. No time to relax and i need to start prep again so that i don't loose momentum. No more month's leave from work ( happens once in a lifetime)
regarding this, i've got good news and bad news.

the good news is that this idea is wrong: no, you won't "lose momentum".
in fact, the GMAT is a test on which that's basically impossible. you could walk away from RC or CR for several years and "lose" nothing at all -- because there's nothing to lose in the first place.
as for SC, you could walk away from that for at least a few months, too, without losing any relevant skills -- unless you don't have any other contact with formal written English.
in quant, unless you think you are in danger of forgetting your high-school mathematics (which, given your score of Q48, you clearly aren't), there's also no possibility of "losing momentum", unless you walk away for, say, ten years and you forget completely what "Sufficient" and "Not Sufficient" mean.

the bad news is that, if you do think this is an issue, then you fundamentally misunderstand the nature of the GMAT exam.
in other words, if you are worried about "losing momentum", that means you haven't taken the time to truly understand what this test is, and what skills it requires (or doesn't require).

--

in fact, not only is the idea of "losing momentum" wrong, but the opposite is true -- that is, you actually should take some time (at least a couple of weeks) completely away from the gmat before you pick up the books again.

basically, the deal with CR and RC is this: the total amount of knowledge that you need for CR and RC problems is exactly zero. there's not a single fact that you have to memorize/recall/know, nor are there recognizable "templates" or "patterns" in the problems.
as a result, there's only so much productive studying you can do in those two areas. basically, all you can do is this:
1/ Achieve a general understanding of how each major task works;
2/ Understand the general mentality with which you should (or shouldn't) approach each major task;
3/ Get to the point where that is actually your default mentality.
... and that's it. once you've done these three things, there's really no more "preparation" that you can do for CR and RC; from that point onward, it's a matter of thinking and reasoning.

the problem with studying for too long is that, eventually, you are going to get bored and start trying to find "patterns" or "rules" that solve the problems. once that starts to happen, any further studying of RC or CR will actually have a negative effect on your score, because these faux "rules"/"patterns" (which don't, and can't, actually solve the problems) will start to crowd out the thought processes that actually do solve the problems.

so, basically, if you've been studying for that long, the first thing you need to do is step away from the test (esp. the verbal section) for a while. then, once you return, you should concentrate only on the types of things i've mentioned here -- since that's really all there is.
