quant : 49 to 51

by zzzzzz » Mon Oct 14, 2013 4:02 pm
Hello,

Background :
I am facing issues in improving my quant score past 49 in practice tests. probably i get stuck with some question in middle and rush in the end or do some silly mistake.
As per material I have completed OG 12 and Quantative Review.

Question :
a) Is there a book or a post or any notes where I can get a list of ALL TYPES of questions that can be asked in GMAT.
A list covering all the possible tricks in form of questions.

Like there were just a few solutions I encountered in OG whose approach was better than mine.
so i am thinking if I can get the list of all the different types of questions that can possibly be asked in GMAT, I might be able to touch 51.

Please help.

Happy GMATing !!

-------------------- EDIT 1 ----------------

Came across TotalGMAT Maths

while searching for the answer to my question. Please provide feedback if this will help OR i am at a totally wrong path

Thank you!!

Hi zzzzzz,

On the practice CATs in which you scored Q49, have you gone back to review the questions that you got wrong? What was the most common reason for the wrong answers? Was it a "silly mistake" or was the question "too hard"? The difference between a Q49 and a Q51 is remarkably "thin", so trying to account for a list of all possible questions isn't a good use of your time or efforts. Also, that difference in Quant Scaled Score wouldn't have a dramatic impact on your overall score.

How have your Verbal Scaled Scores been?

HI Rich,

thanks for the response.
my analysis is there are a couple of types of mistakes i make
a) I am not sure what can qualify for a hard question. I find questions with too much of calculations as hard and if i see those I try to make an intelligent guess and move on but I generally fall in trap of questions which require some trick and i get into the trap that i can really do it. So, thats why this notion of "ALL" trick questions came into picture

b)Other mistake i do is when i have misread/misinterpreted the question sometime
OR
skipped a part of information given in the starting of question

c) since it is the countdown timer so i loose track of time left. I have observered that I tend to subtract the question number and 37 and see the time remaining to see if i still have 2 mins per question. It is easier for me when i use GMAT timer, which beaps as soon as i cross 2 mins.

I am working on Verbal, it hovers around 30 and i know i can improve a lot, but since I feel quant can be my saving grace so i want to do all i can to reach 51.

Let me know in your experience what i should be doing.

Thank you for your time.
