75% quant challenge!

by janusjanus903 » Wed Jun 10, 2009 10:40 am
Hello Guys,

It is probably not a challenge to you but. I need to score above 75% late july in the quantitative section of gmat as a condition to enter a msc. finance program.
I just finished CFA level 1 which took a lot of time and was also part of the condition.
I am 35 from Holland. Was an average math student in higher education.
I am a bit rusty with math but can put in 20-25 hours a week besides my job, for about 6 weeks. I read the concepts and have studied them in the past 15 years ago, lol.
What do you think my chances are? Advice is welcome. Thanks.

I have the following books I want to work through:
kaplan gmat 2003
kaplan gmath workbook
og quantitative and 11th edition

Regards,

Janus

Those books are great for questions. Start with the Kaplan book and keep track of the problems you miss so you can categorize them and identify your weakest points.

Get the Manhattan GMAT books for your weak areas. Complete every problem in the official guides, and make sure you understand how to solve all of them.

You can nail quant with 6 weeks of study.

Hello after a week of reviewing the kaplan 2003 gmat book I took a preptest from mba.com. I scored 38 or 53%. I have the rest of the books to go through, what do you guys think still have 5 weeks to go to 75%. You think it is realistic?

manhatten

by janusjanus903 » Sat Jun 27, 2009 9:22 am
I bought the manhatten books. Worked half way through one of them (total of 4). Really like them, they seem very thourough. I planned some days off to study. So I now have close to 200 hours to prepare solely for quant.
Plan is to take the online manhatten gmat as soon as I run out of questions with my books.

What do you think form Q38 to Q 46 in 200hours??? Who has had similar experiences?

Thanks

software

by janusjanus903 » Sat Jun 27, 2009 9:31 am
https://teach2000.memtrain.com/

I found this free questionbank/ flascard software. I write everything I want to review as a flashcard into a word document and then copy and paste it into the software. I used this software to memorize words and works better than cards for me.

After working through 4 manhatten quant books and 200 questions from the og quantitative review I just scored Q37 in preptest. Which is pretty devastating to me. I need at least 45 Any advice would be appreciated.

Does the practicetest has explanations, I can't find them?

scored q41 1 week ago in preptest.
Last week I finished the og 11th edition quant. I have to go over the wrong answers this week and do practice exams.

I have done 2 questionbanks form manhatten which came with the book found them very difficult 25% correct.
2 days ago without timing I scored q45 at the first mgmat test spend about 15 min extra.
Today I did mgmattest2 timed and scored Q42 so there is progress. I hope to score q45 after revising my wrong answers on the quantOG and 11OG.

I have still 8 full days of preparation ahead of me. Of which 2 days will be revising og. And 2 days preptest

Question what shoud I do the 4 other days to get to a score of at least q45

- work through kaplan 800 (which I have)
- or the regular kaplan cd which I haven't touched yet.
- do only practice tests

Would appreciate some help

Prep

u seem to be on the right track. Focus on mgmat and preps and understand yr weak areas. Another suggestion is spend an hour everyday in the problem and ds section of beat the gmat and solve all the problems posted for the day. This has two advantages 1) u will see all kinds of problems 2) you will see 4 to 5 approaches for each problem

Most of my improvement is down to this website and dont be afraid to post stuff if u have doubts.

Dont focus too much on kaplan and their scoring system is flawed, so dont feel bad if u are in 500's or 600's. Use their material as practice and become familiar with the concepts.

Good luck with yr prep. My exams in two days and my minds completely blank...lol

Thank you very much for your reply. Good luck with your exam!

I have bought the gmatfix companion (it explains the answers of og11). I am going to work through the ones I did wrong. I was not satisfied with the og explanations. It also lists the questions bij difficuly level and has 150 extra "700" questions.

Just finished the advanced sections in the manhattan books, very helpful.

First going for quality then tests.

Congratulations Janus, I guess you seem to be on track to achieve your goal. I too got Q47 on GMAT prep but I need to get it up to 49+ mainly bcoz of my poorer verbal scores.

I found a software that gives the explanations of the powerprep tests. It is from the same website as the gmat companion. It also gives the difficulty level of the question. I find it very useful. The questions in the prep are different from the og11.

Still 3 days to go. Have to work through the green og (quant) and will be training with powerprep and the software.

Tuesday score >Q45

update

Today I took preptest 2 for the first time. scored Q32!??? 18 incorrect. At least 4 stupid mistakes. Lowest score ever. lol. I was overthinking the simplest questions. I am tired of studying this gmat and want it to be over with.

I feel like I am overworking my brain. I just took a revenge mgmat test 4 and luckily scored Q44 although being very tired.

Am going to chill now.

Last study-day tomorrow!
I will probably take 1 or two tests tomorrow and look over some light basic flashcards.

sofar:
prep 1 Q37
prep 1 retake Q38
prep 1 retake Q41
mgmat 1 Q45 untimed
mgmat 2 Q42
mgmat 3 Q42
prep 1 retake Q47 Few repeats
prep 2 Q32 WTF!
mgmat 4 Q44 untimed

Actual test in 2days Q47 (Have to set high goals! I need to score >Q45)
