Why do same point totals translate to different scores??

I recently scored a 620 on the GMAT (will retake) with a 40 Q and 35 V. While browsing the topics, I noticed there were several who scored the same 620, but had much lower scaled point totals. One individual scored a 630 with a 38 Q and 34 V.

Can anyone please explain how this is possible? Do different tests have different scales?

I know its weird & at times frustrating if your overalll score is lesser than the other fellow.

This is really strange from GMAT & I too have seen some (well! when I say some I know quite a few & they come frequently) cases like this.

But let me assure you that your GMAT score will not be looked as "rigid 620" but in range of say 610-640.
Best thing about application process is that there is no absolute measurement for the candidacy. & even for GMAT, though its a quantitative measurement, they dont consider it an absolute rigid score.
