a - incorrect.
b - sentence not in balance (structure) - incorrect.
c - so deeply ingrained as to be axiomatic - unsure if this is a corrct usage of an idiom?
d - viewpoint is not an axion - logical error.
e - This looks grammatically correct - I will go for this answer.

While E does have the correct idiomatic structure, I have to go with C on this one.

e) as deeply ingrained as if it were an axiom
E is wrong because it changes the meaning . the original sentence uses that deeply ingrained that is axiomatic ..which means the author is sure about it ..where as E specifies it were ..hence changes the meaning ..
