If x, y, and z are positive numbers, is x - y < z?

(1) x + y < z
(2) xy < z^2

What's the best way to determine whether statement 1 is sufficient?

How did you approach number 1?

x = x
x - y < x + y (since y is positive)
x - y < x + y < z
x - y < z
