We can PLUG IN THE ANSWERS, which represent the ticket price.
When the correct answer is plugged in, Harold's share of the ticket = $10.

B: 42
Share paid by Harold's department = $4 less than 1/2 of the ticket price = (1/2)(42) - 4 = 17.
Share paid by the HR department = $1 more than 1/3 of the ticket price = (1/3)(42) + 1 = 15.
Harold's share = (total price) - (two department shares) = 42 - (17+15) = 10.
Success!

The correct answer is B.

We can let p = the price of the ticket and create the equation:

p/2 - 4 + p/3 + 1 + 10 = p

p/2 + p/3 + 7 = p

Multiplying the equation by 6, we have:

3p + 2p + 42 = 6p

42 = p
