Hi All,

We're told that over a six-game stretch of her basketball season, Sonya scored 50, 47, 40, 43, 55, and X points and that her average score for those 6 games was X. We're asked for the value of X. For most GMATers, the most direct way to answer this question is to set up an Average formula and solve for X.

Since there are 6 scores, the average of those scores is...

(50+47+40+43+55+X)/6 = X
(235 + X) = 6X
235 = 5X
47 = X

We're asked for the value of X, so we have our answer.

Using the formula average = sum/number, we can set up the following equation to determine x:

x = (50 + 47 + 40 + 43 + 55 + x)/6

6x = 235 + x

5x = 235

x = 47

Sonya scored 50, 47, 40, 43, 55, and x points. Her average score was x
We can write: (50 + 47 + 40 + 43 + 55 + x)/6 = x
Multiply both sides by 6 to get: 50 + 47 + 40 + 43 + 55 + x = 6x
Simplify to get: 235 + x = 6x
Subtract x from both sides: 235 = 5x
Solve: x = 235/5 = 47

Answer: C
