Derek can read x pages in 5 minutes. At this rate, how long will it take him to read p pages?

A. 5p/x
B. 5x/p
C. p/(5x)
D. 5/(px)
E. px/5

The OA is the option A.

Experts, how can I determine the correct answer without knowing the value of x or p? May you help me? Thanks in advanced.

Hello vjesus12.

Let's take a look at your question.

Derek can read x pages in 5 minutes, this implies that Derek can read $$\frac{x}{5}\ \text{pages}\ \text{per}\ \text{minute}.$$ Therefore, to read p pages will take him $$\frac{p}{\frac{x}{5}}=\frac{5p}{x}\ \text{minutes}.$$ Hence, the correct answer is the option A.

Rate = pages / time
So time = pages/rate
So time = p/(x/5) = 5p/x

The rate for Derek is x/5, is it takes Derek p/(x/5) = 5p/x minutes.
