20 percent less money than Phil. If Sal and Phil have
a combined total of $1.80, how much money does
Kim have?
(A) $1.00
(B) $1.12

Suppose Phil has $x

Then Sal has x- 20% of x = 4x/5

Then Kim has 4x/5 + 40% of 4x/5

Q says x + 4x/5 = 1.80 Solve for x to get x = 1

Kim has 4/5 + 40% of 4/5 = 1.12 ANS

Here's a slightly more complete (i think) explanation:

k=(7/5)s
s=(4/5)p
s+p = 9/5

So s+p -s = 9/5 - (4/5)p
p+(4/5)p =9/5
(9/5)p = 9/5
So p = 1

Therefore s = 4/5

k = (7/5)(4/5) = 28/25 = 112/100 = 1.12
