What Can I Do To Improve Profile?

by Karembeu » Wed Mar 09, 2016 1:45 pm
I took the GMAT last December and decided not to apply this year but instead wait to apply during Fall 2016. I did this to be better prepared for the application process and not have to rush through it.

What are some things I can (or should) be doing between now and the R1 deadline to improve my candidacy and chances at the top schools? I figure most of it would be in terms of extracurricular activities, but was hoping people who had experience in this would chime in. Are there any activities/groups/clubs etc. that are preferred by adcoms?

I am aiming for the top 10. My profile isn't ideal since I am an Asian male in finance. Here is a short breakdown of my profile:

27 Asian male, born in the States. Will be 28 by the time applications roll around and 29 by matriculation.
UCLA Economics undergrad, 3.55 GPA with improving trend (3.7 & 3.8 last 2 years, majority of first 2 years was pre-med courses)
730 GMAT (73%ile Quant, 96%ile Verbal). 8 IR, 5.5 AWA
5 years work experience at two companies doing FP&A. First was at a major defense company (1 promotion) and left right before a second promotion. Current job is at a major asset management company. Was just promoted a few months ago. Promotion skipped a level so essentially the promotion was for 2 levels. Non-managerial positions but have essentially acted as a team lead at both companies (youngest in department at both companies as well). Multiple awards at both companies.
Basic volunteer activities such as at a food bank, annual CHOC walk, etc.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks for sharing your profile.

Being active with extracurricular activities would help especially if you can position it as part of a longer term passion or commitment. Being involved for just 6 months in for a cause is not too convincing. It would also be good to highlight a different dimension from what people would expect out of your profile. Breaking stereotypes of an Asian male in Finance would help you stand out from your pool of applicants.

For your essays, it would be great to show your fast career progression, how you have grown personally, as well through your experiences, and how an MBA would boost your career and life goals.

Wish you all the best!

Thanks for the reply! I will definitely keep all those things in mind when going through the application process coming up later this year.

However, as you mentioned regarding the extracurricular activities, would it not even be worth doing anything else on this front since 6 months is pretty short to start something new? I've been doing the CHOC walk and volunteering for the setup every year for the last 4-5 years. It's only a few weekends out of the year though so it's not a weekly type of thing. I've also been volunteering at the food bank for about 2-3 years now, but that's also not a consistent thing (maybe once or twice a month). If I don't add anything new, does this suffice or will it still be a detriment to my overall profile?

Some options you may consider in strengthening your EC activities include deepening your participation with current ones, such as taking a leadership role, initiating new programs/ideas for your current groups, linking up with other organizations, or joining new organizations that are related to these causes. This would be better than getting involved with something totally new and unrelated.

Hope this clarifies and helps generate some ideas.

Hi Karembeu,

It sounds like you have a very strong profile. I definitely believe you are a competitive applicant for these programs.
However, I would like to have a better overview of your extracurricular activities in order to give you advice on how to take full advantage of these in your application.
