Taking the GMAT on May 19

by GCHall840 » Sat Mar 17, 2007 11:45 pm
Hi Eric,
I am currently taking ManhattanGMAT's virtual online course. I decided to take that because I already was using their material, but I was trying to study on my own. I needed the structure of a course like that to push me along.
I did make a complete study plan for the time when I started the MG class on March 11 until I take the test on May 19. However, I find a lot of the material to be quite difficult for me. I understand what I am reading about the math part, but the MG problems and the corresponding OG problems, seem to be more advanced than my current level of understanding. Is there something that I should be doing in the meantime while I am attempting to get through that material?

I tried to complete some sort of math review, but it didn't seem to help me?
I really like the Manhattan GMAT course, but I need some sort of advice about this so that I don't get lost in the process. Honestly, I have tried other prep courses, the Manhattan GMAT prep course seems to be the best of all. All I need to do is score above 500 and I will be OK. I took the GMAT quite a long time ago. I didn't make it to that score.
I also have Princeton Review's manual that is used for their GMAT class. Do you think that it would help for me to use that, too? I do like the way that PR approaches the material as well. Maybe I should just stick to the Manhattan GMAT material? I do have all of my time open just for studying, pretty much(except for six days) until I take the test.
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg:

Have you taken any GMATPrep practice tests to determine your current baseline score on the GMAT?

Since you are already taking MGMAT for your prep, the course should provide a solid study strategy for you. If you feel like you are getting a little lost, I would e-mail your instructor and ask for help. If you still feel lost, then this community can provide some tips for structuring a study strategy.

It's quite natural to feel overwhelmed by the GMAT at the beginning of your prep. It's just one of those things where you've got to dive into the material.

Be comforted by the fact that you're working with a world-class company with proven GMAT prep strategies! Best of luck!

Hi Eric,
Now, that's the reason why I go to this site often looking for clues about how to study for the GMAT. It is because you take the time to respond to what people are asking you...and, very quickly, too.
I really do like the Manhattan GMAT course, a lot. In fact, I believe that it is by far the best GMAT prep course that there is. I do realize it that I am feeling overwhelmed by what I am trying to accomplish. I did make a complete study plan that I designed to go along with the MG course syllabus. In many ways, I am a fortunate person who has the MG course as my guide with all of its course material and supporting online exercises, labs, and tests. And, now I have this site to help me with the things that I need, too. I am also going to use the PR manual that I told you about as another resource because if that helps me, too...Why not? I also know that having a structured study plan for the GMAT is a very important thing, it is a work in process situation where certain things have to be "tweaked" along the way. That doesn't mean that I would change the structure of the plan, I would just add new things if I knew that they would help me along the way, too.

Yes, I am going to dive in deeper this next week. The one thing that I was told by the MG guys is to stay current with each week's assignments. After I finish the work for this next week, I am going to go back over the number properties guide to bring the things I had trouble with, under control. I will be taking the first MG online test next Friday. That way, I can have the baseline score to measure things with.

Thanks again for your help. I will be reading and posting here a lot.

Hi, Greg

One thing that might help with your MGMAT study: you don't have to do every problem in the Official Guide problem sets for each weekly assignment. (In fact, don't do every single OG problem - save some for review later on.)

Also, please do talk to your instructors - they will be happy to give you advice and help you in class. They should have given you their email addresses at class 1, but if you don't have them, you can either PM me and I'll send you their info or you can ask them in your next class.

Also, do sign up for the free weekly Office Hours tutoring session (instructions for how to sign up are in your Welcome Guide). That way, you can get some one-on-one time each week to discuss the particular topics that are giving you the most trouble. This time is use-it-or-lose-it every week; if you don't sign up each week, you lose the time forever. So sign up!

And please feel free to PM me if I can help in any way. :)
Please note: I do not use the Private Messaging system! I will not see any PMs that you send to me!!
