Common skills gained from a master's in mathematics degree include:
An understanding of complex numerical ideas.
The ability to analyze and interpret large amounts of data to solve a specific problem.
Research skills and the ability to extract relevant information.
The ability to reflect on your own work.
My brother’s friend did MSc in Maths at LPU and based on his experience, I will share the details of this programme with you.
Post-graduation in Mathematics is a highly specialized course developed by its curators for the overall development of the students.
The most striking features I have noticed are the way the electives are put as part of the course such as:
ADVANCED DISCRETE MATHEMATICS: Discrete mathematics is the study of mathematical structures like combinations, graphs, and logical statements that are countable or otherwise distinct and separable.
CALCULUS OF VARIATION AND INTEGRAL EQUATIONS: This course provides the knowledge of maximizing or minimizing functional which are mappings from a set of functions to the real numbers and provides the understanding of the solution of an integral equation.
Three DISSERTATIONs: These develop the understanding and advanced skills acquired on their program by applying them to a significant and advanced practical problem and provide an intellectually stimulating environment in which students have the opportunity to develop their skills to their full potential to pursue research
ELASTICITY: This course deals with the recent development of research related to elasticity.
FUZZY SET THEORY AND APPLICATION: Provide insight into fuzzy logic technology and fuzzy system design methodologies. Focuses on providing fundamental knowledge of fuzzy relation and fuzzy decision making.
INTEGRATION THEORY: Provide necessary background for advanced courses based on measure theory and convergence. Focuses on metric space and normed space.
INTERNSHIP: It is designed to enhance classroom learning by providing students with on-the-job work experience.
PROJECTs-I and II: These courses develop the understanding and advanced skills acquired in their program by applying them to a significant and advanced practical problem. And develop the capacity for learning and logical thinking. It is suitable for students aiming to pursue research and for students going into other careers.
TOPOLOGY: Provide knowledge about the relation between Topological space, Metrization, and solution of the topological problem with the help of algebra as a fundamental group.
MATHEMATICAL APTITUDE: This course is specifically designed to help the students to crack competitive exams like GATE, NET and to gain more knowledge of courses other than regular courses.
PEDAGOGY OF MATHEMATICS: Acquaint teacher trainees with the nature of the school subject, including its relation to disciplinary, the aims, and pedagogical approaches for the teaching of the subject at different stages of school.
SOFT SKILLS: Incorporate the social and life skills among students such that it helps in bridging the gap from campus to corporate.
And these electives are apart from the usual curriculum of course as specified by UGC.
So yes, Since LPU has designed the course such that the pathways to corporate, academia, research and government jobs are opened for students and LPU has a stellar record of placements too, it is one of the top options to pursue M Sc Mathematics Hons.
