Did you take a test prep course? If so, what were your practice scores? If you have not taken a course, a good one should surely raise your GMAT. If you took a course and were scoring higher on practice tests, it might also be worth retaking the test. You are the best judge of whether 650 is your best possible score. Perhaps working with a tutor for a short while could help you identify your weaknesses. Since the verbal is much lower than the math, schools will probably look more closely at your AWA. If that is below average, you should consider retaking.

There are many fine schools that will be happy to take someone with solid work experience and a 650, but they are not among the top ten, or possibly not even the top 25 unless you have an exceptional story to tell in your essays. One challenge you face is that there will be many applicants with technical backgrounds who have scores in the 700s. Overall, you will be in a very competitive pool for any school.

It looks as though you are considering a career change from a technical background to marketing/sales. (It is not clear what type of consulting you are interested in. Technical? Marketing? strategy?) If you are looking to change you will need to make a strong case for why you want to change, why your background is relevant your new field, and why you believe you will be a success. You will need to focus on making your essays clear and persuasive.

Good luck

Hi Mahesh,

You've got an interesting profile and background! If you're looking to apply between top tier 10-25 schools - you may not need to re-take GMAT. Although - you're options will definitely get better if you re-take but this also depends on your long term goal and what do you want to do after your MBA.

If you'd like me to walk you through your options of a) re-taking GMAT benefits or b) going with a 650 and applying - email me at the address below with BTG reference link. We can arrange a skype call or something. Looking forward to speaking with you.
