Unhealthy habits married couples

by ssgmatter » Tue May 18, 2010 6:40 am
It is true of both men and women that those who marry as young adults live longer
than those who never marry. This does not show that marriage causes people to live
longer, since, as compared with other people of the same age, young adults who are
about to get married have fewer of the unhealthy habits that can cause a person to
have a shorter life, most notably smoking and immoderate drinking of alcohol.
Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument above?
A. Marriage tends to cause people to engage less regularly in sports that involve
risk of bodily harm.
B. A married person who has an unhealthy habit is more likely to give up that
habit than a person with the same habit who is unmarried.
C. A person who smokes is much more likely than a nonsmoker to marry a person
who smokes at the time of marriage, and the same is true for people who drink
alcohol immoderately.
D. Among people who marry as young adults, most of those who give up an
unhealthy habit after marriage do not resume the habit later in life.
E. Among people who as young adults neither drink alcohol immoderately nor
smoke, those who never marry live as long as those who marry.

Let me share my understanding of the arg and then analysis of each of the options:

arg says it is not the marriage that causes people to live longer but it is their bad habits that actually affect their health and hence for how long they will live
now my take on the options
A is out as it talks about sports
B compare who will give up the habit and as such no comparison is made here so out
C is just irrelevant makes no sense
E strongly strengthen the fact that it is not the marriage but the habits that affect the longevity, ie, it says that marrying does not impact the longevity but the bad habits
D talks about people who do not resume bad habits after marriage....No sense!

So I think I will go with E here.

Please correct my understanding.

Thanks!
Best-
Amit

The argument at the onset describes the Phenomenon that young couples who marry live longer than those who do not. In the next sentence it specifies the reason for this is that the young couple who eventually marry have fewer unhealthy habits. This is the reason specifically - smoking and immoderate drinking of alcohol - for their longevity not the institution of marriage itself - Conclusion.
Assumption - People who have fewer bad habits find it easier to live together.
Bachelor and Spinsters who imbibe such exemplary habits also live longer than it is obvious that marriage is not the cause for longer life span.
IMO E.

Hi ssgmater,

IMO: E is correct answer. However, I see your understanding of the problem may have some trouble.

A: is wrong not because sports are out of scope but because answer choice A, some what shows that marriage helps people live longer. the reason is that marriage makes people participate in risky activities less frequently.

B, the way to explain is the same to A

C, this is out of scope answer choice. The question talks about people who marriage as young adults. C talks about people who marriage as smokers and non-smokers.

D, If we have 1000 people. 900 give up and 800 never resume. I am making an example to illustrate what D says

In this case, we can somewhat conclude that marriage is good because it cause people not continue their habits.

But If we have 1000 people. 100 give up and just 80 never resume. we can't conclude anything whether marriage is good because we don't know what happen with 900 other people. Because we have many alternatives here. So D can't be correct.

E, as you say is correct answer.

Hope that helps

B should be the answer.

as the question is which statement if true will strengthen the argument.
conclusion is that married people live longer than unmarried people as he involved in bad habits.

E weaken the argument

IMO its B since premise talks about the marriage and bad habits. E talks more about people who have no unhealthy habits and never get married live as long as the ones who get married...
