Profile Evaluation- Advice needed

by [email protected] » Wed Jun 20, 2012 8:32 pm
Hi,

I wish to join a B-School in 2013.
My profile is as follows:-

X (CBSE)-87.2%
XII (CBSE)-87.2% (top 0.1% students all over India in Chemistry)
B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi - 7.187/10 (Last semester was really bad as I had Jaundice in that semester)
GMAT score:-710
AWA score- 5/6

I am currently working as a Executive Engineer in Sales and Tendering Department of L&T-MHI Boilers Pvt. Ltd., a Joint venture company (JV Company) between Larsen & Toubro Ltd. and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI)(basically in power sector). I have 3 years of experience and my job description primarily includes Sales & Industrial Marketing' of Supercritical Steam Generators, to manage Commercial Conditions with both vendors and Customers, and Finalization of Contact documents through negotiations with clients

The following are my achievements during the tenure:

"¢I have received the highest performance rating for years 2009-10 & 2010-11 both in department and among the GET batch of 2009.
"¢Handled largest Industrial Boiler Package in Country for my organization, from Qualification to estimation
"¢I prepared most of the standard formats and developed most of the vendor database for costing process.
"¢Achieved target reduction in costs of bought out items for Steam Generators to arrive at lowest overall cost in history.

My extracurricular activities include following:

"¢Won DIATHALON, the Aqua tera robot making competition at IIT Delhi Technical Fest.
"¢Won the Annual Quiz Competition 'EXQUIZITE', organized by quizzing club of L&T Faridabad, for year 2009-10 and correspondingly was nominated by L&T for Regional round of National Management Quiz 2010, organized by AIMA
"¢I am quite active in sports and have won the Volleyball competitions at L&T and at college, I have also played football at L&T and ended up as finalist and also have some training in Tennis.
"¢I have participated in Social activities like making charitable contributions, teaching students from Slums etc. but nothing for a substantial period.
"¢Was elected as Board of Student Welfare (BSW) club Financial secretary at IIT Delhi (an institution level post)

I believe that my extracurricular is weak and I also have limited social aspect in my profile, should I apply round 1 this year for ISB or should I gain 5-6 months of experience at some NGO and apply in round 2? Please let me know what is lacking in my profile and what can be done to strengthen my profile?

Also, can anyone tell me which all B-Schools should I target as right now I only have ISB as target B-School and I am really not much aware about the same ?

Please help me on my current predicament.

Thanks in advance

Everything you have looks good. Even super-good.
:)
So the question is now: When compared to all these other super-good candidates, why will they choose you?

And the answer is: because you are more interesting, more unique, your goals are more realistic, and more passionate and ambitious. Because all the other applications sound the same, but YOURS is different. And THAT, I would say, is what you need to work on from here on in.

Hi Anuraag,

Your profile looks pretty solid to us atleast for ISB. IIT brand helps and a very diverse experience in power sector which very few candidates offer really sets you apart.
With Mohali campus open now ISB will prefer more candidates from power and energy sector.

Focus on your achievements at workplace and the tasks which you have handled. These differentiate you.

Your extra currics also look good to us ( you are unnecessarily worrying).

So, dont wait to add any NGO work ( B schools really dont value that now as every Indian writes that) and start working on your essays and application.

Feel free to contact us for any queries.
