GMATPrep Quant vs. MGMAT Quant

by pscher31 » Fri Jul 05, 2013 7:54 am
Hey everyone,

I know many people feel the MGMAT Quant is harder than the GMATPrep quant, but I'm having opposite results. I'm scoring much higher in quant on MGMAT exams in comparison to my quant score on GMATPrep. Any ideas? It looks like I'm getting more wrong answers in a row on the GMATPrep, any way to combat this?

Hi pscher31,

The GMAT considers several factors when assigning you a score. Getting a really hard question wrong won't kill you, but you have to do some review to determine WHY you're getting questions wrong. The Empowergmat program provides a tool called Mistake Register that you can use to track your errors and spot patterns. You can still do your own analysis though. How many of the mistakes were "silly"? And what were the specifics (misread part of the prompt? math mistake? answered the wrong question? copied something down incorrectly?). Making too many mistakes on too many questions that you should have gotten correct will keep you from the 700+ club. Be vigilant with how you do your work, write everything down on your pad and remember that the GMAT gives you a score that you earned. So earn it!

The subjects tested on the GMATPrep are not exactly aligned with those of the 3rd party tests. So you may be better at the topics on those tests - even if other people insist that those 3rd party tests are harder. So for you the GMATPrep might be harder.

So let's think about the differences between the two:

The GMAT is edited and tested more than any other test. This allows better incorrect answer choices and more "tricks" and "traps" to be employed. 3rd party tests often involve more "straight math" and fewer questions that look simple but are actually very difficult because they lure people into these very careful chosen wrong answers.

I would say that you need to look to your techniques and figure out why you are missing these types of questions - those that appear simpler than they are.

I just responded to another question that is a bit similar and I think you could benefit from the articles that I listed there. Here is the link to that discussion. The articles are at the end of my posting. You might want to read my entire post there. https://www.beatthegmat.com/advice-neede ... 65778.html
