can't understand why

Some Age, in which great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas

is better then

Some Age, when great ice sheets existed where there are areas now temperate ?

I don't see any problem with usage of now in both the sentences. In both cases, now temperate modify areas with only difference that in sentence 1 it is before noun and in sentence 2 it is after.

However, I see trouble with where there are. I don't see any antecedent for where!
