Let Leo's current weight be x and the brother's weight be y
Currently acc to the question,
x+y = 340
If Leo gains 10 pounds,
X+10 = y+50%(y)
X+10=y+y/2
X=3y/2 - 10
Substituting the value of x in the original eqn we get,
y = 140, which gives
X= 200

i usually pick the numbers from options from D or E

L + B = 340

choose option E

200+140 = 340
+10 gain

210-140 = 70

50 of 140 = 50 / 100 * 140 = 70

I would say below the 50th percentile. It is a word problem, but it seems like a pair of fairly straight-forward equations that resolve pretty nicely. Just about everyone here has gotten the correct answer.

Now do keep in mind that being at a lower level makes this exactly the kind of problem you have to get right. You may only see a few questions that are this straightforward but it is important to get them right.

We can also solve the question using only 1 variable.

Let L = Leo's current weight.
Let 340-L = Brother's weight.

Aside: If Leo's weight is L, and their combined weight is 340, then the brother's weight must be 340-L

If Leo gains 10 pounds, he will weigh 50% more than his brother.
In other words, Leo's new weight will equal his brother's current weight plus 50% (0.5 times) more.
In other words, Leo's new weight will be 1.5 times his brother's current weight

So, we can write: L+10 = 1.5(340-L)
Solve: L+10 = 510 - 1.5L
2.5L+10 = 510
2.5L = 500
L=200 = E

L= LEO AND B= BROTHER

L+B= 340

L+10=0.5B+B

L= 1.5B -10

1.5B -10 +B= 340

2.5B = 350

B = 140

L = 340-140

L = 200

L + B = 340

Solving, L = 200 & B = 140

Hence, E !

after 10 pound gain there total weight is 350

if his brother is "x" kg then leo is 1.5*x

1.5x + x = 350
2.5 x = 350
x = 140

So current weight of LEO = 340 - 140 = 200 (340 - 140 since weight of his brother remains the same)

SO correct ans "E"
