Hi there,
That's a great question! I wondered the same thing when I was applying! (Caveat before I proceed: I am an MBA admissions consultant.) Unfortunately, I discovered that there's really no silver bullet or one-stop shop for finding the right admissions consultant. The relationship you develop with your consultant will be a highly personal one, and as such, the selection process is also highly personal. In other words, a consultant who was a great match for your friend might not be right for you. While you should leverage 3rd party resources like reviews and the forums, my advice to you is to take your time, do your research (check out different admissions consulting firms' websites at the very least), talk to multiple people/firms and when you do, ask the tough questions whose answers are going to help you make the right decision for you. Questions like "How many years of professional experience do you have working with MBA applicants?", "Have you ever worked with an applicant like me?", and "How many clients do you take per round?" are a great place to start.
There are a lot of great consultants out there so it's ultimately up to you (and your budget!) to decide which one is going to be the right partner for your MBA journey.
Best of luck to you! I'm happy to talk further if you'd like. Feel free to drop me a line at
