Parallel Reasoning

by Uva@90 » Sat Jun 13, 2015 12:11 am
Hi
Please help me with the below question,

Nick: The best way to write a good detective story is to work backward from
the crime. The writer should first decide what the crime is and who the perpetrator
is and then come up with the circumstances and clues based on those
decisions.
Which one of the following illustrates a principle most similar to that illustrated
by the passage?
(A) When planning a trip, some people first decide where they want to go
and then plan accordingly, but for most of us, much financial planning
must be done before we can choose where we are going.
(B) In planting a vegetable garden, you should prepare the soil first and
then decide what kinds of vegetables to plant.
(C) Good architects do not extemporaneously construct their plans in the
course of an afternoon; an architectural design cannot be divorced
from the method of constructing the building.
(D) In solving mathematical problems, the best method is to try out as
many strategies as possible in the time allotted. This is particularly
effective if the number of possible strategies is fairly small.
(E) To make a great tennis shot you should visualize where you want
the shot to go and then determine the position you need to be in to
execute the shot properly.

OA :E

Thanks,
Regards,
Uva.

We should find the answer choice that change the order of doing things. Because the norm is coming up with the circumstances and clues and then decide about who is the criminal. The question tells us something opposite.
The rule: working backward
A is incorrect because the rule does not apply in all the circumstances.
B is incorrect because the order of planting is not backward here.
C is incorrect because the time alotted to work is irrelevant.
D is incorrect because the time alotted to work is irrelevant.
E is correct because here the focuse is on working backward. Usually we find a position we need to be and then make a tennis shot. Answer choice E is going backward. So it is correct.

Mitch,

Answer option C also say the same right ?

They do plan the design first and construct the building..So why C is wrong ?

Please explain me what I missed ?

Thanks

Option C is vague and does not say much about the order of events!

"(C) Good architects do not construct their plans in the
course of an afternoon; an architectural design cannot be divorced
from the method of constructing the building"

This translates as: good artitects take time to do their job. The design and the methods of construction are done at the same time. This does not say anything about what happens at the end and the beginning.

In order for C to be correct, here is what needs to be said:
The artitects first decide what buildings to construct and who is going to be the builder....

The differences between the passage and C are many:

Passage: how to achieve a GOOD RESULT (a good detective story).
C: the nature of GOOD CREATORS (good architects).

Passage: the best ORDER to follow (work backwards).
C: how much TIME should be allotted (longer than the course of an afternoon).

Passage: decide the BIG IDEAS (the crime and the perpetrator), then come up with best way to achieve these ideas (the circumstances and the clues).
C: the creation (an architectural design) cannot be divorced from the method of creating (constructing the building).
