CR Bible:Numbers + Assumption Question

by gmat740 » Tue Mar 24, 2009 6:22 pm
In 1980, Country A had a per capita GDP that was $5000 higher than that of European Economic community.By 1990, the difference when adjusted for inflation had increased to $6000. Since a rising per capita GDP indicates a rising average standard of living, the average standard of living in country A must have risen between 1980 and 1990.
Which of the following is an assumption on which an argument depends?

a) Between 1980 and 1990, the Country A and European Economic Community experienced the same percentage increase in the population.

b) Between 1980 and 1990, the average standard of living fell in the European Economic community

c) Some members countries of the European Economic community had, during the 1980's, a higher average standard of living than country A.

d)The per capita GDP of the European Economic community was no lower by more than $1000 in 1990 than it had been in 1980

e) In 1990,no member country of European Economic community had a per capita GDP higher than that of Country A

Only D makes sense..

if Z = X-y

conclusion: SOL increased for Z
assumption is that y has not decreased by the same amount.

IMO OA is D

D is very tricky though, "..no lower by more than $1000..." confuses the reader.

a) the same percentage increase may affect differently to a per capita GDP.
b) the av.per cap GDP might have risen given the data.
c) out of scope

E) incorrect assumption, because some members may have had higher GDP than other, and still the outcome may be as described.

we are left with D, which makes sense, but i still get confused with "no lower by more than $1000 ..."

hope i am right. :)

This question was from CR Bible, PowerScore, from where are you preparing the CR part?

Any advice for SC?

Hey! Gmat 740!

I am preparing from Manhattan CR, and have never tried PowerScore. However, I think folks here really appreciate powerScore. For me The best SC is manhattan SC, and some grammar notes which you can download from beatthegmat website.

best

Well I feel D is the answer. I guess I'm right. If some expert could throw light on the reasoning it would be a big help.
