MIM now or MBA later ?

by Lifetron » Fri Apr 05, 2013 2:10 am
I have been preparing for GMAT. I have been working for 2.5 years now. So, I have two options:

1. Do MIM now
2. An MBA later.

Which choice will benefit my career, in a long term ?

Thanks!

In general, I would say an MBA is preferable if you don't mind waiting and already have a good job. The degree is far more well known, and the prestige is also higher. And if you can go in with a few years experience, and then make your jump, it might be more worth it to you than just continuing to study now.

Hi

Vital question you need to answer is - does your current job contribute towards your career goals. In case you go for MBA 2,3 years down the line; will your work experience be counted as relevant. If yes, you should work for some more time and then go for MBA.
Remember, you have just worked for 6 months and your career choice may change in course of next 2 years (it happened with most of us :)). So, take some more time to outline your career goal.

Generally MiM or other masters programs are good for specialized domains like International affairs, Logistics & supply chain, Derivative trading etc.

But since your long term goals is Sales & Mktg in FMCG, we would recommend getting into a entry level sales or mktg job which gives you real good exposure and makes the candidature strong, working for 2-3 years, cracking a 720+ on GMAT and then applying to top MBA programs.

MBA from a top school can really help you break into a good marketing job with retail chains such as Wamlart, tesco etc.
