Few parents find it difficult to cope with the fact that their children have become adults; consequently, they see their children as they were during their adolescence.

A. they see their children as they were during
B. they see their children as they had been during
C. they see their children as if during
D. their children appear to them as they did in
E. their children appear to them as though in

A frnd asked me this question today, and confirmed that the OA is A.
I am extremely confused with the usage of 'they', can somebody explain this to me !

Thanks in advance.

I think the issue is with tenses and awkwardness of construction.

First tackling the confusion with they/them/their .........all refer to the parents.

Now lets look at the choices:

A - looks good keep as a contender
B - If we make do with the simple past it is preferable to the perfect tenses, hence A is better than B hence do not keep.
C - Awkward construction - as if during??
D - when we use 'did' we are thinking in terms of ellipsis here, let us fill out the ellipsis after 'did' - 'did ..appear' this construction does not make grammatical sense
E - changes meaning. 'appear to them as though in adolescence' they are adolescents to begin with.

Hence pick A

Hi Arpita,
Thanks a lot for your quick response. I had eliminated the other options just as you did, but I wasn't convinced with choice A.

But, yes, looks like, amongst the available options, A makes "more" sense.

Thanks again,

Regards,
