In the MGMAT guide there are 2 examples of which usage

1. Angola, which was ravaged by civil war for many years after it gained independence from Portugal, which is not one of Africa's success stories

In the sentence above second which is correct which modifies Portugal, I understand this

2. Mary buys cookies made with sugarfree, an artificial sweetener, which tastes as sweet as corn syrup that her brother loves but which contains fewer calories than does an equivalent amount of corn syrup.

in this sentence the second which is correct and the explanation says that it correcly modifies Sugar free because of the usage of "But" causes parallelism and relative clauses should start with the same relative pronoun. The first sentence also has parallelism using comma.

Can some one please shed some more light on this.
