Hello all,

I am planning on applying for the 2010 fall term to start b school. Can you please evaluate my profile? Thanks in advance!

Age: 26 GMAT: 740 (Q49, V42) (97%) AWA: 5.5
Undergrad gpa: 2.87 in Computer Engineering at UCSB
Work experience:
- 2 years at software application company (public company w/ ~1000 employees)
- 2 years at large Software corporation (80,000 plus employees – acquired smaller company that I was at for the 2 years above).
- Promotions in past 4 years (customer care org):
1. Promoted from Customer Advocate to Associate Project Manager
2. Promoted to Strategic Project Manager
• Ownership of go live projects for the major customers of the company
• This position gave me a lot of insight and experience working closely with both our company executives and client upper management as these were the key “strategic” accounts for our company
3. Promoted to Escalation Management Team Lead
• Handled all internal / external escalations
• Lead team of 6 developers
4. Promoted and received “Manager” title with 3 direct reports
5. Added responsibility to 8 direct reports including Sr. Principal and Principal engineers
Extracurricular activities: I am a bit lacking in this area. I am currently doing some volunteer work for the Special Olympics and Sacred Heart. I also ran both the men’s basketball and golf league for our company before we got acquired (I am not sure if this is worth mentioning. What do you think?). I am also a scratch golfer and spent a lot of time volunteering at a local golf club during high school, but am not sure if this will count towards extracurricular activities since it was so long ago (I was also president of our golf club in high school).

I feel that my work experience and GMAT scores are very strong and good enough to qualify for the top schools, however my GPA is very low. Fortunately in the 3 calculus classes I took during undergrad I received A+, A+, B+, and in the Differential Equations class an A. I will also have very strong recommendation letters from my current management.

I am currently looking at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and USC. Do you think these are realistic goals? Also, would it even be worth my time to apply to the top schools like Wharton / Stanford?

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out, and I apologize for the long post, but I wanted to make sure to include as much detail as possible to ensure an accurate assessment!

Hi,

For the top schools like Wharton/Stanford/UC-Berkeley, the GPA is all important as well. Further, as UC-Berkeley is a part of the UC System, they tend to be a little lenient with GPAs as compared to others (of course not at the cost of your potential for excellence. GPA range is still very high. Check website). Hence, these schools would be a stretch for you despite a good work experience and a solid GMAT score.

Our perception is that to be safe, you need to be very strong in all areas of your application. Clearly, you are a little unsafe in the GPA section. Now your experiences, work, GMAT score, deviation from your excellence in subjects like calculus (explain this well! in the optional essay) could compensate, but how much and how well, we cannot comment. Only the application outcome will tell.

Nonetheless, we feel you should apply to the schools you are targeting. Your GPA is something you cannot improve upon now, unlike your GMAT score. So go ahead and see what comes out of it.

All the best. Trust this helps.

Ankit

cj,

as i started to look ranges profiles accepted to the schools you mentioned, i understood the concepts. I think your profile is very good enough to be accepted even to Wharton Harvard. Mba degree is not all about numbers a low gpa, a low gmat can be compensated by other factors and as i can see your gmat work experiences is very good enough to compensate your gpa and frankly your gpa is not too low for your target schools. Just go ahead, try and you will see that you will succeed.Your profile with low gpa and high gmat can even bring good diversity to business school.

Remember business schools not growing einsteins or academicians, they just want to know if you have the ability to do the master program and pass the courses they offered.
