Democracy

by avenus » Thu May 28, 2009 12:32 am
Sociologist: Some economists hold that unregulated markets should accompany democratic sovereignty because they let people vote with their money. But this view ignores the crucial distinction between the private consumer and the public citizen. In the marketplace the question is, “What do I want?” At the voting booth the question is always, “What do we want?” Hence, supporters of political democracy can also support marketplace regulation.

Which one of the following most accurately expresses the conclusion drawn by the sociologist?

(A) Voters think of themselves as members of a community, rather than as isolated individuals.
(B) Unregulated markets are incompatible with democratic sovereignty.
(C) Where there is democratic sovereignty there should be unregulated markets.
(D) Private consumers are primarily concerned with their own self-interest.
(E) Opposition to unregulated markets is consistent with support for democracy

i wud really love to elaborate but when OA is not there ...i dont get the enthu to explain....

if u put OA with spoiler, then getting the answer right prompts a person to share his reasonin...but if i am myself not sure whether my answer is right or not...i tend to be lazy

At the voting booth the question is always, “What do we want?”

this is wat stimuli says...in essence this means voters "think of themselves as members of a community, rather than as isolated individuals.

Dear 2010gmat,
thanks for overcoming your laziness :) and making the effort of posting your explanation. I guarantee it won't be long b4 I post the OA. I understand what you say, but I do feel that revealing the OA in advance tends, in many cases, to trick people (maybe not you) into manufacturing an explanation "adapted" to the OA even if that's not the choice they would have made in the first place. I think this approach leaves some more room for genuine discussion. Very frequently, wrong answers with wrong explanations can provide valuable learning material, so even if you're not sure about your answer (which will probably happen a couple of times on D-Day) I say you could find your motivation in the fact that, by explaining your reasoning, you're actually opening it up for criticism/praise by others. This could yield some worthwhile insight. I'm of the opinion you will be reaping the benefits more sooner than later...

Anyone wants to give it a shot? with explanation, please. OA coming up (this doesn't necessarily mean the answers given so far are wrong...).

would go for E

between B, C and E since they talk about democracy and market regulated/unregulated

B. too extreme. passage says democracy can go hand in hand with regulated markets, doesnt mean that unregulated maket is incompatible with democracy

C. says opposite.

E. correct IMO. opposition to unregulated market=>support of regulated market is compatible with support of democracy.

IMO, E.

A) Though this is the question to be asked, it's not always the one voters ask.
B) Hence, supporters of political democracy can also support marketplace regulation.
C) Not true, the 'also' throws this one off.
D) Not part of the conclusion.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T
