Q48/ SC1000

by Deepak Varshney » Thu Oct 26, 2006 5:50 pm
Hi Guys

Could anybody advise as to why the answer is A

According to some analysts, whatever its merits, the proposal to tax away all capital gains on short-term investments would, if enacted, have a disastrous effect on Wall Street trading and employment.

(A) its merits, the proposal to tax

(B) its merits may be, the proposal of taxing

(C) its merits as a proposal, taxing

(D) the proposal’s merits, to tax(A)

(E) the proposal’s merits are, taxing

'its merits' doesn't make any sense to me.

It is important that you identify the subject of the main clause here correctly....Subject of the main clause is --- the proposal -- Hence the proposal can be enacted..

C,D,E - incorrect -- stating taxing can be enacted ....

B - incorrect -- unidiomatic....Correct idiom is -- proposal to + infinitive

Hope it is clear now.....

Could any of please explain why D is wrong. And what is the difference between A and D. According to me both are equally right... Or is it something in GMAT SC that when option A itself is right, the first priority goes to option A and then to other options.....
