CR 1000

by f2001290 » Sun Jun 03, 2007 9:03 am
Since no one returns from death, we can never be certain about what passes through the mind of the dying person. For the unconscious, the confused, and the heavily sedated, these final moments are probably meaningless. However, for the mentally alert, it is quite possible that death presents itself as an unbelievably glorious experience, a flight into an entirely new universe of sensation. Why should we think so? Some people who have been reprieved from “certain” death at the last moment have experienced what goes through the consciousness of those who are not so fortunate. For example, parachutists who have survived falls report experiences that resemble psychedelic “trips.”
The primary point of the argument in the passage is
(A) no one returns from death
(B) dying can be a glorious experience
(C) we can never know what passes through the mind of a dying person
(D) some people are reprieved from death at the last moment
(E) some people “die”, yet live to report their, experiences

This seems more like RC than CR...

What's the OA? I'd also be interested to see how to approach 'such CR'...

B appears to be the correct answer because it paraphrases the main point.

I will go with B, here B & C present the best choices

however C gets undermined by the following premise in the stimulus

Why should we think so? Some people who have been reprieved from “certain” death at the last moment have experienced what goes through the consciousness of those who are not so fortunate. For example, parachutists who have survived falls report experiences that resemble psychedelic “trips.”

This clearly reflects that we do have some knowlege of what people feel near death.

I think it's B.

The question is basically asking what the conclusion is.

(A) no one returns from death
"Since no one returns from death" --> since is a clear signal that no one returns from death is a premise and not the conclusion; it is evidence therefore cannot be the main point

(B) dying can be a glorious experience
"it is quite possible that death presents itself as an unbelievably glorious experience" --> conclusion that the author is arguing for; this should be the correct answer

(C) we can never know what passes through the mind of a dying person
"Since no one returns from death, we can never be certain about what passes through the mind of the dying person." --> second half of the premise mentioned in (A); cannot be the main point.

(D) some people are reprieved from death at the last moment
"Some people who have been reprieved from “certain” death at the last moment have experienced what goes through the consciousness of those who are not so fortunate." --> this statement reads like evidence that the author considers true and uses as support for his conclusion; cannot be the main point.

(E) some people “die”, yet live to report their, experiences
"For example, parachutists who have survived falls report experiences that resemble psychedelic “trips.” --> specific example of the general premise discussed in (D); specific examples of a general premise simply reinforces the premise; cannot be the main point either.

In this question, we can sort out the premises from the conclusion using the "TRUTHNESS" of the statements. Which statements are undeniably true as stated by the author? Which statements read like they could be true or could not be true. The ones that appear to be true in all cases are most likely premises. The ones that seem to be arguable are the suspects for the conclusion and main argument.
