545. Of the twin supernovas, the most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one that has irrevocably altered astronomists’ ideas about the origins of the universe.
(A) the most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one
(B) the one most recently discovered is the largest, but it is the small one
(C) the most recently discovered is larger, but it is the smaller
(D) the more recently discovered one is the large one but the small one
(E) the more recently discovered is the larger, but it is the smaller one
Hi,
The answer is E) but why in E) it says larger instead of larger "one"??

Largest can't be used here since we are comparing 2 things and hence the use of superlative form is wrong. This rules out A&B. For the same reason since we are comparing 2 objects we can't use large (we have to use the comparitive degree). Hence D is out. C violates parallelism clause...
"larger"...."the smaller"...
It should be "the larger" and "the smaller"
Hence E

Well in that case, if option C was ...
(C) the most recently discovered is THE larger, but it is the smaller
and E was...
(E) the more recently discovered is the larger, but it is the smaller one
Then which one would be the correct option ?
There are only two differences in the above 2 answer options .
# 1 .) more / most
# 2 .)smaller / smaller one

Whatever you said is correct. When you are comparing the two things most cant be used you have to use more. Hence E is the correct answer...
superlative cannot be used when comparing two things... a Comparative needs to be written
