Is the answer (C)?

I'd say "discriminate between" is when you distinguish between two things (in this case genuine diamonds and imitation diamonds).

"Discriminate from" is perhaps used when you're discriminating one part of a group from the rest of the group. For eg. discriminate tall boys from the rest of the 2nd grade. (I'm highly unsure of this though, just my educated guess)

Usage of Discriminate:

Followed by "between": to note or observe a difference; distinguish accurately: to discriminate between things. - C is correct (OA)

Followed by "from": to make or constitute a distinction in or between; differentiate: a mark that discriminates the original from the copy. Hence, A is the incorrect usage.

What is the difference between "discriminate from" and "discriminates between".


The idiom "discriminate between x and y" is used to describe 2 different things.
Eg: The blind cannot distinguish between the colour green and red.

The idiom "discriminate x from y" is used for 2 similar things.
Eg: Only experts can distinguish the original mona lisa from a fake one.


Here I believe "fake diamonds from genuine diamonds". And the fact is both are diamonds.
