IMO E
A&B - 'this' is unclear whether its refering to hydrocarbons or courtship
C - which incorrectly refers to courtship.
D - changes the meaning. It sounds like the hydrocarbons help the flies in assiting to taste. They actually help in distinguishing. Plus assisting and distinguish are not parallel.

I am also with E
HCs are known to be important in courtship and apparantly that assists
we do not need an and here
bcoz what we are talking is continuation and not another importance or something
so A and B can be ruled out.
also at end
A / B says
to distinguish their own species from that of / from those of
this mean to distinguish their own species from species of others
which is certainly incorrect
C
which is incorrectly used here
it refers to coutship
being is wrong as "in being able to " does not make any sense.
D
is wrong bcoz it says from those of at the end...
also D says
assisting flies to taste
which is wrong
it assists flies...
Hope this helps

IN E the use of "That" sounds like the hydrocarbons only help that flies who taste hydrocarbons of other flies...

I feel "and" in options A and B is not wrong.
If we consider only first two options.
1st independent clause: Hydrocarbons......courtship
2nd independent clause: apparently....others
There are two things, which are wrong in A and B that makes them incorrect.
1) In both the options "this" has no clear referent.
2) Correct Idiom - Distinguish X from Y
Distinguish their own species from others
Option C - "being able to" is redundant.
Option D and option E
Option D uses incorrect idiom. D also changes the meaning.
Therefore, E is the answer.
Pls do let me know if you find any flaws in my analysis.
Thanks
