The answer is D) but why A) is wrong? it seems A is also gramatically ok...

(A) but supplementing - verb form is wrong and not parallel with first sentence
(B) and had supplemented - usage of 'though' is more appropriate than 'and'. usage of past perfect tense(had supplemented) is not required.
(C) and even though they supplemented - 'and even though' is redundant
(D) although they supplemented - correct
(E) but with supplementing - verb form is wrong and not parallel with first sentence
