Had a target of 700+ as i have week academic scores and wanted to have a good score to balance out the lack of academic achievements. Lazy as I am i kept believing that I shall get there but the bell rang when i got a 600 in the GMAC test1 , 8 days before D Day. Decided to take a week off work and tried to study but could not really do much (have been away from studying for more than 9 years).Day before D Day, i took the GMAC Test 2 and get a 680. So I see that I do have a chance and I really go for it . When finally the score pops up, it feels like a knife through the heart (well almost :( )

My situation:

Work Experience - interesting and unusual with experience of entrepreneurship and experience as a union rep at a national level and involved in national wage negotiations with Tesco(the biggest superstore in the UK).

Extra curricular activities - have some interesting things to write about.

Academic records - Quite average,to say the least.

My Predicament is that I want to apply to London Business School and i feel that my gmat score is inadequate in asserting that my lack of academic achievements were more a result of adverse circumstances than a lack of intellectual capability.

I definitely want to apply in the 2nd round (last date - 06/01/09) and do not know whether i should take the gmat again and look for something like 730 - 750. I would have about a month to prepare as I go for a 15 day vacation to Europe :) I had actually kept this month to write good essays and preparing for the gmat may eat into essay writing time.

Would really appreciate if anybody could leave any advice.

Mate - I am in the same boat as you! I am applying for various european schools including LBS and believe that my 700 is border line. What I have decided to do is knock off the essays first, and then give GMAT another go.

As most people have said ( and I believe with this), if you get rejected it will not be because you had a 690 as opposed to 710, however, if you are on the waiting list an improved GMAT score >710 could look favorably.
